As of September of this year, the CRS reported that contractors make up 62 percent of personnel in Afghanistan.Much of the activities previously carried out by military are now being completed by contracting personnel. In the past, contracting was done on an ad-hoc basis, but today according to Defense Department officials, contractors are serving an ever increasing role including contingency operations.
