A review of UK's Procurement Industry in Recession
A recent Supply Management SM100 poll suggests purchasing needs to improve its image with the next generation. The opportunities for travel and the scope to make strategic, influential decisions are not being highlighted meaning school leavers and graduates are not considering a role in Procurement as a viable career option. At the entry level it is also an underpaid profession compared to HR, legal and finance. So, how can Procurement overcome this? How can it become an exciting career opportunity? These questions need to be addressed by the industry as a whole and by CIPS in order to keep the flow of talent coming through. The immediate need within the profession is to find experienced, talented individuals. Many organisations are looking at major recruitment projects in 2010, with a strong focus on the indirect categories and well as the soft skills, such as stakeholder management and supplier relationship development.
