Baseball is a game comprised of two teams with nine players each. The team that wins is the one that makes the most runs. Â In a run, a player hits a ball thrown by another player, and runs past four markers called bases, which are arranged at the corners of a ninety-foot square, or diamond. The two teams take turns in batting and fielding, and the team that makes the most runs is declared the winner.In baseball, it is the umpire who calls "Play" to begin the game. Â The ball is then considered live and in play, and remains so until infractions are committed, when umpire calls "Time". Â While the ball is not in play, no athletes can be called out, no bases are run and no runs may be made. However, runners are allowed to advance one or more bases as the result of plays that were ongoing while the ball was alive.
The pitcher is the player designated to throw the pitch to the batter. The batter is the one tasked to strike the ballð€”or notð€”depending which course he chooses.
The goal of the offensive team is to have its batter transition to a runner position, and have the runners advance. Â The defensive team needs to prevent offensive players from advancing to runners, and progress through the bases.
Once the batter becomes a runner, and completely runs through all bases, the team scores a run. Â When three offensive players are legally put out, the team then takes the field, and the teams switch offensive and defensive roles.
