I was applying for a job using a simple resume cover letter a short while few months ago. One thing that I know helped me a lot was to do some research on the company I wanted to work for.  I found an ad online about a company that was hiring and I checked it out.

A cover letter is your personal sales message to prospective employers. It needs to be personal and unique which is the exact opposite of a sample. When you use a sample, which many more people have also used, you"re going to end up with something that looks very similar to a whole bunch of other people"s letter as well. Forget about unique, you"ll be branded as boring and unimaginative in seconds when the person reading your application will see how it"s like so many others they went through that day.

So, if you want to stand out from the crowd and be the person they want to hire, make sure to use samples and examples sparingly if at all.

I"d rather that you not use samples at all and simply write a cover letter yourself. You don"t need to be a published author to do it. You just need to be able to write in your own voice and not be afraid to let your personality shine. Remember that a cover letter is just a single page. This isn"t a long and tedious work that should take hours. You can and should write everything yourself.
